Sundar Pichai Defends Google AI Strategy and Rejects Claims of Falling Behind

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai mounted a robust defense of Google’s artificial intelligence strategy during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on July 22, 2026. Addressing investor anxiety regarding recent flagship model delays and increased competition, Pichai rejected the notion that the company is trailing behind rivals in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

Addressing Concerns Over Model Delays

Investor unease has grown following the postponement of Gemini 3.5 Pro, which was originally scheduled for a June release. The model was intended to bolster Google’s standing in AI coding and autonomous “agent” tasks—two areas where competitors such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and various Chinese firms have accelerated their development.

During the call, Pichai acknowledged that Google needs to improve in specific areas. Responding to JPMorgan analyst Doug Anmuth, who questioned whether Google could remain competitive at the industry’s leading edge, Pichai stated that the company has clearly produced frontier models and continues to lead in many attributes, though he acknowledged that there are areas, such as coding and agentic coding, where they need to improve.

Highlighting the Gemini Ecosystem

Rather than focusing on the delay of the flagship model, Pichai directed attention toward the broader Gemini ecosystem. He emphasized the utility of Gemini Flash, which he described as a “workhorse” model that provides a lower-cost, high-speed solution for enterprise software, data analytics, cybersecurity, and customer-service agents.

The company recently expanded this portfolio with the release of Gemini 3.6 Flash, which reportedly improved by more than 10 points on coding benchmarks compared to its predecessor while utilizing fewer tokens. Additionally, Google unveiled Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite and a security-focused model, Flash Cyber, while keeping Gemini 3.5 Pro in partner testing.

Google’s momentum in this space is significant, with the company reporting that Gemini has reached 950 million monthly active users, an increase from 750 million in the fourth quarter of 2025.

Future Roadmap and Gemini 4

Looking toward the future, Pichai attempted to reassure analysts by teasing the upcoming release of Gemini 4. He described the project as a very ambitious effort involving a significantly larger model designed to compete at the absolute frontier of AI development.

Addressing concerns raised by Barclays analyst Ross Sandler regarding the company’s release pace, Pichai disclosed that the roadmap for Gemini 4 includes rolling out new models on a near-monthly cadence. Pichai suggested that people would be pleased when the model is released, reiterating that the company remains very committed and very confident in its ability to maintain its position at the leading edge of the industry.

Financial Performance and Capital Expenditure

Despite the competitive pressures, Google’s cloud division reported strong results, with revenue rising 82% year-on-year to $24.8 billion, exceeding the average analyst estimate of 64%. The company attributes this growth to the integration of its AI portfolio, including custom chips and the Gemini model suite, across its cloud products.

To support these ambitions, Alphabet is significantly increasing its investment in infrastructure. The company raised its capital expenditure guidance by $15 billion, bringing its projected annual range to between $195 billion and $205 billion.

While the company maintains that its AI investments are redefining its business operations, Wall Street remains focused on the company’s ability to regain leadership in coding and reasoning as capital costs rise. Alphabet shares have faced downward pressure, trading down approximately 9% since the end of April.
