Spain Declares National Emergency in Madrid and Avila

In response to multiple out-of-control fires, the Spanish government declared a national emergency in the Madrid region and the province of Avila late Thursday. The move transfers primary crisis management to the military emergency unit of the Spanish Armed Forces, a specialized disaster relief branch, to accelerate the deployment of firefighting resources. Approximately 10,000 people have been evacuated in the Madrid region alone, according to reporting by DW.

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who visited a fire-stricken area in Guadalajara, emphasized the severity of the situation. The government has deployed every available resource to stop the terrible fires currently affecting numerous areas: Avila, Leon, Toledo, Madrid and other parts of Spain, he stated in a post on X. Sanchez further linked the disaster to broader climate trends, noting, Year after year we clearly see how climate change kills and destroys wealth in our communities. This isn’t politics. It is science, it’s about facts.

France Invokes EU Civil Protection Mechanism

Across the border, French President Emmanuel Macron announced that France has invoked the European Union’s civil protection mechanism to secure international assistance. The request brings support from several European neighbors, including two Croatian Canadair aircraft, two Portuguese Air Tractors, and two heavy-lift Black Hawk helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

The situation remains particularly volatile near the Atlantic coast. In the Gironde region, fires near the tourist hub of Arcachon Bay forced the evacuation of approximately 12,000 people. Regional wildfire chief Marc Vermeulen described the conditions as unfavourable, noting that emergency crews were forced to defend the area house by house as the fire gained significant force. One resident, 69-year-old Patrick Martineau, described the sudden nature of the evacuations in Le Porge: The gendarmes came and knocked on every door, the fire was about 500 metres away – we grabbed some things and left.

Italian Officials Investigate Arson Allegations

In Italy, the response has been complicated by suspicions of criminal activity. While roughly 6,000 firefighters and civil protection officials are battling blazes across Sicily and the mainland, local authorities in Calabria have accused malicious individuals of intentionally setting fires. Reports from the region indicate that some of these fires may have been spread by tying flammable, liquid-soaked rags to the tails of stray cats, a method described by local officials as a deliberate act of arson.

Regional president Renato Schifani reported that approximately 50 fires remained active in Sicily despite the use of water-bombing aircraft.

Record-Breaking Heat and Land Loss

The intensity of the 2026 fire season has been exacerbated by a series of back-to-back heatwaves. Data from the European Forest Fire Information System indicates that the total land area burned in the EU so far this year is the second-largest on record, with some regions seeing twice the average amount of land destroyed compared to the last two decades. In Spain, temperatures hit extreme peaks, with Cieza in the province of Murcia recording 44.7C on Thursday.

As of Friday, the focus for authorities remains on containment and the safety of residents in threatened zones. While some communities in Spain were permitted to return home on Thursday, the erratic nature of the fires continues to pose a challenge for emergency services across southern Europe. The combination of heat-stressed vegetation and high temperatures continues to drive the risk of further ignitions as the weekend approaches.
