The United States has recorded 2,318 confirmed measles cases in 2026 as of July 24, surpassing last year’s total of 2,289. This surge marks the highest annual infection count since 1991. Public health officials attribute the ongoing crisis to persistent gaps in vaccination coverage across multiple states, including South Carolina, Utah, and Arizona.

The latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that the U.S. is facing its most significant measles resurgence in more than three decades. With more than five months remaining in the year, the country has already eclipsed the record-breaking 2,289 cases reported throughout 2025.
While measles was declared eliminated in the United States in 2000, recent transmission patterns show that the disease is once again circulating widely. In the last 18 months alone, the number of confirmed cases has exceeded the total recorded over the previous 25 years combined. According to the CDC, 43 states and Washington, D.C., have reported at least one infection this year, with significant clusters continuing to emerge from outbreaks that began as early as 2025.
Regional Outbreaks and Public Health Challenges
South Carolina experienced one of the largest and longest-running outbreaks in recent history, centered at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Spartanburg. The outbreak, which began in October 2025 and persisted until April 2026, resulted in 997 confirmed cases and at least 21 hospitalizations. The investigation into the cluster was complicated by the nature of the events involved; a Christmas brunch held at the church was an open community potluck, leaving health officials without a complete attendee list for contact tracing.

Other regions are facing similar, persistent challenges. Utah has been managing an outbreak for 12 months. Meanwhile, Pennsylvania has seen a rapid increase in cases since April, with 111 confirmed infections. Experts emphasize that the sustained transmission is a direct consequence of vaccination rates falling below the 95% threshold required to maintain herd immunity, a sentiment echoed by Dr. Andrew Racine, president of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Looking ahead, international health officials are scheduled to meet in November to assess whether the United States’ measles elimination status remains valid. With cases still being reported across states like Virginia and Pennsylvania, the path to containing the virus remains uncertain.
