Calvyn Justus, a 30-year-old Olympian and fashion designer, secured his spot in the 50m freestyle after a significant comeback following a career-threatening back injury that left him unable to walk for a year. I went through a pretty bad back injury, took five years away from the sport. And when I healed up, I just wanted to do something with my body again, Justus explained. His return is fueled by a desire to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Medal Hopes and Team Strategy

Beyond individual success, South Africa is looking to revitalize its relay program. The team is competing in seven of the eight available relay events, with the mixed 4x100m medley relay—likely featuring Coetzé—viewed as a key area for development ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The squad is also supported by swimmers like breaststroker Lara van Niekerk and Erin Gallagher, who won silver in the 50m butterfly at the 2022 Games.

The team’s confidence remains high despite the absence of retired breaststroke star Tatjana Smith. Breaststroker Chris Smith, who also secured a qualification spot, emphasized the importance of mental fortitude. When I line up to compete, I don’t think about losing at all. If you do, you are guaranteed to fail. I know I’m good enough to compete against anyone because I’ve put in the hard work during training. So there’s no reason for me not to be confident, Smith said.

As the competition progresses, the focus shifts to the semifinals and finals. The swimming schedule at the Glasgow Games is set to continue through Wednesday, with the South African contingent aiming to improve upon their historical medal tallies in the pool. For Coetzé, the immediate challenge is the semifinal round tonight, where he will look to translate his record-breaking heat speed into a podium finish on Saturday.
