As the New England Patriots opened their 2026 training camp this week, a familiar face appeared on the sidelines in coaching gear. DeAndre Hopkins, a three-time first-team All-Pro receiver, has joined the team’s staff in an advisory capacity, sparking immediate interest regarding his future in the NFL. Despite speculation that he might be seeking a roster spot, head coach Mike Vrabel clarified that the visit is purely exploratory as Hopkins considers his next steps after a 13-year playing career.

The connection between Hopkins and the Patriots’ coaching staff is rooted in a decade-long professional history. Vrabel served as the Houston Texans’ defensive coordinator from 2014 to 2017 while Hopkins was a standout receiver there, and the two reunited during the 2023 season when Hopkins played for Vrabel’s Tennessee Titans. According to the coach, the current arrangement was initiated by the player himself.

“(Hopkins) and I talked, and he asked if he could come hang out for a couple days and be around the coaches and be around the personnel department. I called the league and made sure that that was gonna be OK. Then I invited him back, and that’s where he’s been the last couple days, and he’ll be here for the next couple days.”

Vrabel emphasized that while the transition is being explored, Hopkins remains a free agent who has not formally announced his retirement. The coach noted that Hopkins, who appeared in 17 games for the Baltimore Ravens last season, is taking time to evaluate what life after football looks like. He loves football, Vrabel stated. People that love football and have played the game for the length of time that he did, [he] wants, I think, to explore the opportunities and what that looks like after his playing career is over.

The arrival of a player with Hopkins’ resume—which includes five Pro Bowl selections and seven seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards—has been met with enthusiasm by the Patriots’ roster. Linebacker Robert Spillane, a former teammate of Hopkins on the Tennessee Titans, was among the first to greet him on the practice field. Tight end Hunter Henry described the veteran as a valuable asset to have in the room, while cornerback Marcus Jones noted the specific expertise Hopkins offers regarding route running and progression reads. That’s a guy that whenever we have questions we can actually ask him and learn about the knowledge about how guys think about running routes and being a receiver, Jones said.

The 2026 Free Agency Status and Future Outlook

Hopkins’ appearance in Foxborough comes after a 2025 season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he recorded 22 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns. While he told SiriusXM NFL Radio last month that he still feels he has a lot ball left, he also expressed that he is not interested in forcing a return to the field if the right situation does not present itself. This measured approach to his career has fueled the current transition into an advisory role.

The Patriots have been active in reshaping their receiving corps this offseason, notably acquiring Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown and signing former Green Bay Packers wideout Romeo Doubs to a four-year, $68 million contract. With the roster depth already bolstered, the team’s decision to host Hopkins appears to be a mutually beneficial opportunity for the veteran to gain coaching experience while providing mentorship to younger players.
