While Santo Domingo is the primary host, sporting events will take place across various locations throughout the country. The scale of the event involves approximately 6,000 athletes representing 37 countries and territories. To accommodate the influx of participants, the Dominican government and the organizing committee invested US$ 154.2 million into the construction and renovation of dozens of sports facilities.

Opening Ceremony and Spectacle

The opening ceremony at the Estadio Félix Sánchez is expected to feature a high-level production. The organizing committee confirmed the inclusion of 200 dancers, a fashion segment, and a performance by a recognized Dominican musical group. The venue is prepared for the arrival of athletes, with the official cauldron already installed and the flags of the participating nations flying within the Centro Olímpico Juan Pablo Duarte.

The symbolic Llama de los Valores (Flame of Values) began its journey on April 11, 2026, when it was lit in Teotihuacán, Mexico. Following its arrival in the Dominican Republic, the torch participated in the Ruta Wiche García Saleta, a relay that concludes on July 24 when the final relay runner lights the official cauldron during the opening ceremony, as reported by Infobae.

Competition and Participating Nations

The games will feature 40 disciplines, including traditional sports such as athletics, basketball, handball, and baseball. Additionally, the event will introduce esports, with approximately 80 competitors vying for the first medals in that category in the history of the games. The competition is set to be a significant preparation ground for athletes aiming for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

While the host nation, the Dominican Republic, will field the largest delegation with 720 athletes, Mexico arrives with a strong contingent of 636 athletes—322 men and 314 women. Mexico has dominated the medal table in the previous two iterations, Barranquilla 2018 and San Salvador 2023. According to Gob MX, the Mexican delegation, led by CONADE Director Rommel Pacheco and Mexican Olympic Committee President Marijose Alcalá, has officially taken up residence in the Athletes’ Village. The Mexican team includes notable high-level athletes such as Olympic medalist and diver Osmar Olvera, judoka Priscah Awiti, and archer Alejandra Valencia.

Logistics and Expectations

Beyond the elite competition, organizers anticipate thousands of visitors, contributing to the tourism and economic activity of the region. The games represent the third time the Dominican Republic has hosted the competition.

The event schedule indicates that while the official opening is July 24, some sports, including water polo, began activity on July 20. The Games serve as a major international event for the summer, following the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as noted by Telemundo.
