Tom Holland Triggers Online Sell-Out of Semir Shorts After Shanghai Shopping Trip

After being spotted shopping in Shanghai’s Yu Garden district on July 23, actor Tom Holland—known for his role as Spider-Man—inadvertently triggered a retail frenzy for a pair of Semir seven-quarter-length shorts. The brand, which saw its online inventory for the item sell out immediately, has since pivoted to capitalize on the viral fashion moment.

An Unplanned Fashion Statement in Shanghai

The incident began during a promotional trip for the new film Spider-Man: A New Day, which Holland visited alongside his wife, Zendaya. On the morning of July 23, local onlookers captured footage of the actor navigating the city in long trousers. By the afternoon, however, the star had visited a Semir retail outlet in the Yu Garden area, emerging with a pair of seven-quarter-length shorts and a distinctive green shopping bag. The rapid change in attire—prompted by the intense summer heat—quickly became a point of discussion among fans. According to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau, a high-temperature yellow alert was updated to an orange alert at 14:18 on July 23 and remained in effect until 17:10. Social media users jokingly noted that Holland had been forced to change into shorts because of the intense heat in Shanghai.

The Retail Surge at Semir

The store manager at the Semir Yu Garden location recalled to reporters that staff did not initially recognize the actor when he entered the shop around 12:30 p.m. on July 23. It was only as he prepared to leave, after finalizing his purchase, that his identity became clear. At the time, there were many foreign customers in the store hoping to take photos with him, accompanied by his wife and security personnel, while fans gathered outside to watch. The store had recently reopened following renovations and was still operating with its second floor unfinished, meaning Holland and his party conducted their shopping primarily on the first floor.

The impact on the brand was immediate. As photos of the actor carrying the Semir shopping bag circulated online, the specific style of trousers he purchased saw a massive spike in demand. The shorts, which carried an original price of 239 yuan and an activity price of 159 yuan, sold out of all sizes online by the afternoon of July 23.

Brand Response and Future Plans

Semir’s corporate team moved quickly to leverage the sudden attention. The official flagship store’s livestreaming channel began featuring the shorts, with presenters pairing them with similar shirts, T-shirts, and caps to recreate the look. Customer service representatives noted that while the item is a men’s style, its loose fit has made it popular with female customers as well. Because of the high volume of orders, the item was shifted to a pre-sale status, with customers informed that shipments were expected to be sent within 18 days.

To sustain the momentum, the Yu Garden store has reconfigured its layout to display the items as a complete “Holland-style” outfit, including shirts, T-shirts, shoes, and the now-iconic shopping bag. While the physical store still held stock—partially because the shop was not yet accepting online orders due to ongoing renovations—the company is now planning to set up a dedicated check-in spot within the store for fans to visit.

The marketing push has extended to interactive promotions. During livestream broadcasts, the brand has included 50-yuan movie vouchers and the popular green shopping bags as prizes for viewers. This retail activity coincided with the Spider-Man film series official Weibo account announcing that Holland would be making a surprise appearance at the global roadshow in Shanghai, with a red carpet event for the Ten Years of Spider-Man cast meeting scheduled to be broadcast on multiple platforms on July 24.
