God of War Laufey Launches on PlayStation 5 on February 16, 2027

The long-standing speculation surrounding the next chapter in the God of War franchise has finally ended. During a dedicated panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, developers confirmed that God of War Laufey is officially slated for a February 16, 2027, release on the PlayStation 5. This announcement provides a firm date for a title that had been the subject of rumors since earlier this year, when industry reporter Jason Schreier first suggested a February window.

A New Protagonist and Franchise Expansion

In a departure from previous entries, God of War Laufey shifts the spotlight away from Kratos, placing his wife, Faye, in the lead role. According to Insider Gaming, the lead actress for the project, Deborah Ann Woll, noted that the concept for this specific adventure was first pitched to her nearly a decade ago, dating back to 2018. Players will step into her story, an experience that franchise director Cory Barlog confirmed will be expanded upon in future releases.

During the same panel, Barlog announced that Santa Monica Studio is already developing a second, separate God of War game that will feature Kratos as the lead.

Gameplay Reception and Kratos’ Role

Initial reactions to the project have been varied. Following the 20-minute gameplay trailer showcased during the June 2026 PlayStation State of Play, some fans expressed skepticism regarding the shift in protagonist and the perceived simplicity of the combat in the title’s opening segment. IGN noted that while visuals and combat mechanics received praise from some quarters, others remained critical of the decision to move away from the series’ veteran hero.

Santa Monica Studio Confirms New Kratos-Led God of War Game in Development

Despite the change in lead, Kratos is not entirely absent. Footage revealed that the game begins with Kratos and Atreus burning Faye’s body—a scene familiar to players from the 2018 reboot—and shows Faye encountering glimpses of Kratos while she is briefly imprisoned. It remains unclear how significant his presence will be throughout the duration of the campaign, as he is occupied with the events surrounding God of War Ragnarök.

Physical Media and Market Timing

The release date places God of War Laufey in a crowded February 2027 calendar, arriving shortly after Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis and shortly before Persona 4 Revival. The title also benefits from a physical disc release, a point of contention for many fans following Sony’s recent announcement that it will cease production of PlayStation discs starting in 2028.

As Beebom reported, the confirmation that the game would ship on disc had previously fueled speculation that a 2027 release was imminent. With the date now locked, players can begin adding the title to their PlayStation Store wishlists.
