Once dismissed as bulky novelties with limited utility, current smart spectacles offer discreet designs that closely resemble conventional eyewear while packing cameras, microphones, speakers, and direct AI integration.

That single-quarter total matches the sales volume recorded across the entire 12 months of 2024 and represents a 167 per cent increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
Social media giant Meta currently dominates the sector, capturing more than two-thirds of all smart glasses sales through its partnerships and branded eyewear lines. Competitors RayNeo and Xiaomi trail behind, while hardware giants Samsung and Google prepare to enter the fray with their own dedicated hardware releases.

A study published in JAMA Ophthalmology demonstrated that smart spectacles can assist individuals with low vision by helping them read words and identify surrounding objects. Proponents also note practical applications such as translating foreign road signs instantly or providing spoken directions.
However, testing trials involving multiple AI wearable devices—including Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses, Amazon’s Pioneer Bee bracelet, and Plaud’s Notepin S —revealed that while individual features can be useful during travel or specific tasks, social awkwardness often causes users to leave the gadgets in backpacks or on desks rather than wearing them as daily norms.
Corporate interest remains high regardless of consumer hesitation. Major technology executives maintain that wearable AI will soon become essential for professional competitiveness. Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg asserted that individuals without AI glasses or similar wearable interfaces face a significant cognitive disadvantage compared to their peers and competitors. Similarly, Amazon Senior Vice President of Devices and Alexa Panos Panay emphasized to CNN in June that the more these gadgets know about a user, the better they can perform complex tasks and provide tailored advice.
Upcoming Hardware Launches and Industry Accountability
As Samsung and Google prepare to launch their collaborative smart glasses line in the spring, manufacturers face mounting pressure to implement stricter privacy controls and clearer safety warnings. The upcoming Google and Samsung frames feature plastic designs equipped with integrated cameras, indicator lights, shutter buttons, microphones, speakers, and sensors providing access to the AI agent Gemini.

Rick Osterloh, Google’s senior vice president of devices, noted that the upcoming hardware will allow wearers to take phone calls, listen to music, capture photos, and search their visual environment simply by asking. Yet analysts like Carolina Milanesi argue that tech companies must shift their marketing narratives away from vlogging convenience and toward positive, pro-social behaviors such as accessibility and translation tools, while simultaneously enforcing robust security safeguards to protect public trust.
