French authorities in Orange discovered the remains of five newborn babies and fetuses packed inside cardboard boxes and plastic bags in a residential home. The grim discovery came to light after a woman born in 1994 gave birth to a healthy baby at a hospital.
An ordinary medical visit turned into a criminal investigation in southern France after a man uncovered the remains of five infants hidden inside his home. According to reporting by NOS, the shocking find was made in Orange, located in the southern region of the country, where the couple lived with two children aged eight and 12.
How the Discovery Unfolded in Orange
The sequence of events began when the woman went to a local hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain. While there, she gave birth to a healthy baby on Monday. Back at the couple’s residence, the man searched the premises and stumbled upon cardboard boxes containing the remains. According to Le Parisien, the man and his wife had previously argued over the contents of the hidden boxes.
Following the discovery, the man took one of the infant remains to the hospital in a bag, which immediately prompted hospital staff to alert the authorities. Police officers subsequently searched the home and recovered the remains, which were packed inside plastic bags within the cardboard containers.
Medical Context and the Condition Known as Denial of Pregnancy
Media reports indicate that the woman, born in 1994, suffered from denial of pregnancy, a psychological condition where an expectant mother remains entirely unaware that she is carrying a child. Her body reportedly showed scarcely any physical symptoms of pregnancy.
Research cited in NOS suggests this condition occurs in approximately one out of every 500 pregnancies. Despite the psychological phenomenon, the woman had previously raised two children, aged 8 and 12, according to the same reports.
Ongoing Investigation by French Authorities
Authorities have launched an active inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the infants and fetuses. As the investigation continues, the woman remains hospitalized in Orange and has not been placed under arrest, while investigators work to determine the exact timeline and cause behind the macabre discovery.
