Shohei Ohtani and Max Muncy Make Franchise History in Slugfest

Tuesday night’s series opener played out less like a tight pitching duel and more like an offensive showcase, with both lineups answering each other swing for swing across seven chaotic innings.

Ohtani was far from finished. That blast was Muncy’s 130th at Dodger Stadium, tying Eric Karros for the most home runs in the ballpark’s history. Despite those milestones and a 13-hit night for the Dodgers, the offense could not quite outpace Seattle’s long-ball barrage.

Justin Wrobleski Struggles Against Seattle’s Up-in-the-Zone Approach

While the Dodgers’ bats stayed active, starting pitcher Justin Wrobleski endured his toughest outing of the month. The young left-hander surrendered five earned runs on seven hits over six innings, including four home runs, which bumped his ERA from 2.62 to 2.88. Coming into the night, Wrobleski had allowed just eight homers across 107 innings this season.

Mariners hitters capitalized on fastballs and pitches elevated in the strike zone. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted that Seattle executed a deliberate game plan against the left-hander.

“You can tell that they were looking up and trying to pull the baseball vs. Justin. A lot of balls that were up, a couple of them out of the zone that they were getting to. So clearly their plan was to get on the fastball or get on stuff that was up in the zone, and he didn’t change eye levels enough. That’s why he gave up a lot of slug.”

Wrobleski admitted postgame that his execution and adjustment to the opponent’s approach fell short, though he felt his overall stuff remained sound.

Dominic Canzone and the Mariners Offense Find Their Spark

Seattle’s offense relied heavily on power, hitting five home runs—all of them off left-handed pitching, matching a franchise feat last accomplished on May 2, 2002, against the Chicago White Sox. Cal Raleigh, Julio Rodríguez, and newly reinstated veteran Rob Refsnyder each connected for solo or two-run shots earlier in the contest.

The defining blow belonged to Dominic Canzone. After tying the game at 5-5 with a 433-foot blast off Wrobleski in the sixth inning, Canzone delivered again in the eighth. Following a single and a stolen base by Rodríguez, Dodgers reliever Alex Vesia entered the game to face the left-handed hitter.

“I mean it’s a pitch that’s had different results. Obviously it’s not the best pitch. I would have liked to have it more outside or more down. Kind of just flush it and on to the next one. Clearly need to be better in that situation. I felt like my stuff was good after that.”

Canzone crushed the second-pitch 82-mph slider 414 feet to center field, sealing his second multi-homer game and his team-leading 18th longball of the year to put Seattle ahead 7-5.

A Frantic Ninth Inning and Roster Updates at Dodger Stadium

Los Angeles refused to fold quietly in the bottom of the ninth against Seattle closer Andrés Muñoz. Dalton Rushing opened the frame with a sharp infield single before Shohei Ohtani hit a line-drive double to right field that was misplayed by defensive replacement Victor Robles, allowing Rushing to score and Ohtani to advance to third. After two quick outs, Muncy worked a grueling nine-pitch walk and stole second to put the winning run in scoring position, but Betts grounded out to shortstop to strand the runners and close out the win.

The Mariners continue their three-way series Wednesday when right-hander Emerson Hancock takes the mound against Dodgers left-hander Eric Lauer.
