Biological aging isn’t a universal constant. While the longest-lived human in recorded history, Jeanne Calment, reached 122 years and 164 days, several animal species operate on a completely different temporal scale. Greenland Sharks and the 150-Year Wait for Maturity
The Greenland shark (Somniosus microcephalus) stands as the longest-living vertebrate on the planet. Unlike most animals, their metabolism does not diminish as they grow older, though the exact reason for this remains unclear.
This slow-motion existence extends to their reproductive cycle. Females do not reach sexual maturity until approximately 150 years of age. The biological investment in offspring is equally protracted, with pups born alive following a gestation period that can last between 8 and 18 years.
These sharks are the only species of shark capable of living in the Arctic year-round. They aren’t built for speed; they average a swimming pace of 0.34m (1ft 1in) per second relative to their large size.

On land, the Seychelles giant tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea hololissa) holds the record. To mark his supposed 190th birthday in 2022, residents provided him with a cake of his favorite foods.

The survival of these animals often hinges on human intervention. The Seychelles giant tortoise population plummeted following the arrival of European settlers and non-native species, but current restoration efforts are helping their numbers grow again.
