UT Dallas Study Finds Daily Brain Training Improves Cognitive Health at Any Age

A three-year study by the University of Texas at Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth reveals that 5 to 15 minutes of daily brain training can significantly improve cognitive health at any age, challenging the notion of inevitable cognitive decline. The research, involving 4,000 adults aged 19 to 94, tracked participants through the BrainHealth Index, a tool measuring clarity, connectedness, and emotional balance.

The Science Behind Daily Brain Training

Researchers at the University of Texas at Dallas’ Center for BrainHealth conducted a landmark study tracking 4,000 adults over three years, finding that consistent daily brain training can enhance cognitive function regardless of age. The study, published in Scientific Reports, involved participants engaging in brief, targeted exercises such as filtering text to improve focus, solving puzzles, and learning new skills. These activities, requiring just 5 to 15 minutes a day, were linked to measurable improvements in the BrainHealth Index, a comprehensive measure of cognitive well-being.

This study challenges the prevailing narrative of inevitable cognitive decline, suggesting instead that brain health can be proactively cultivated at any age, the researchers wrote. The project, launched in 2020, also emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes, such as reducing multitasking and prioritizing social connections, to support long-term brain health.

The BrainHealth Index: A New Benchmark

The BrainHealth Index, developed by the Center for BrainHealth, evaluates cognitive health through three pillars: clarity of thought, emotional balance, and social connectedness. Participants completed this assessment at baseline and every six months, revealing significant gains across all age groups. Dr. Lori Cook, director of clinical research at the Center, highlighted that even those with the lowest initial scores showed the most dramatic improvements, suggesting that poor brain health is not a life sentence.

The index aggregates 20 metrics, including tools like the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, to provide a holistic view of brain health. Every brain is as unique as a fingerprint and possesses a lifelong potential for growth, Cook said, emphasizing that the study’s findings apply to individuals of all ages, from 19 to 94.

Age Isn’t a Barrier to Cognitive Improvement

One of the study’s most striking conclusions is that cognitive gains are not confined to older adults. Participants in their 20s and 80s showed comparable improvements, debunking the myth that brain health interventions are only for seniors. For too long, we’ve operated under the outdated notion that we need to wait until something bad happens to our brain before we do anything for it, said Sandra Bond Chapman, chief director of the Center for BrainHealth. This study reminds us that our brain is not defined by age; it is defined by possibility.

Practical Steps for Daily Brain Health

The study identifies several actionable strategies for improving brain health. Dr. Cook advised against multitasking, which she called one of the most toxic behaviors we can do for our brain. Instead, she recommended focusing on one task at a time for 30 to 45 minutes, a practice she terms the brain power of one.

Other key recommendations include taking regular “brain breaks” of three to five minutes, managing chronic stress, and prioritizing real-life thinking over passive activities like crossword puzzles. The goal isn’t becoming an expert puzzle solver, it’s helping your brain function better in everyday life, Cook said. The study also emphasized the role of social interaction, noting that strong relationships and meaningful activities are critical to lifelong cognitive health.

What This Means for the Future of Brain Research

The Center for BrainHealth is expanding its research, with 400 participants from the Dallas area undergoing over 1,200 brain scans at the Sammons BrainHealth Imaging Center. This data will link psychological improvements to physical changes in the brain, offering deeper insights into how daily habits affect neural pathways.
