European soccer body UEFA has threatened FIFA with legal action following the collapse of FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s controversial plan to sell a stake in future World Cup profits to private investors Apnews. Lawyers representing UEFA informed FIFA that the European governing body is actively considering legal action, arbitration, or regulatory complaints regarding the proposed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) plan and all related matters.
UEFA Threatens Legal Action and Demands Evidence Preservation
A letter dated Friday, sent by the New York legal firm Dechert and seen by Apnews, named 18 FIFA executives instructed to retain data, documents, and electronic messages as potential evidence. The legal notice warned that any destruction, deletion, alteration, concealment, or loss of relevant materials could constitute the spoliation of evidence. UEFA’s lawyer, Andrew J. Levander, stated that legal proceedings are reasonably anticipated because stakeholders believe the plan is fundamentally incompatible with proper football governance.
The Defunct Private Equity Plan and Global Backlash
The secretive proposal aimed to raise $4.2 billion from investors including the New York investment firm of Joshua Kushner according to AP reports. The FFE spin-off, valued by FIFA at $20 billion, would have taken control of the organization’s lucrative commercial and tournament operations Apnews. In exchange, the project offered FIFA’s 211 member federations one-off payments of $20 million each, with a mid-September deadline to accept according to AP reports.
The scheme provoked a global uproar after being revealed in media reports according to AP reports. UEFA led the backlash, and its 55 member federations met to agree on boycotting all FIFA events and competitions while the proposal remained active according to AP reports. UEFA welcomed the ultimate withdrawal of the plan, noting that the proposal had been unanimously rejected by UEFA’s national associations and numerous other federations and confederations worldwide. Infantino dropped the proposal early Saturday according to AP reports.
FIFA chief operating officer Kevin Lamour issued a stinging statement to Apnews describing the initiative as the project of just one man and stating that staff felt deceived by their boss, Infantino.
Political Fallout and Presidential Stakes for Infantino
The private equity plan triggered a dramatic turnaround in fortunes for Infantino according to AP reports. Following the World Cup final, he had appeared to be a secure lock for re-election unopposed next March for a fourth and final term in office through 2031 according to AP reports. However, UEFA signaled that Infantino had lost the confidence of world soccer and stated that no option should be off the table regarding his presidency according to AP reports.
While UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and CONCACAF issued strong opposition statements, Infantino retains support in Africa, and South America’s CONMEBOL relies on him to expand the 2030 World Cup to 64 teams from 48 according to AP reports. FIFA had previously briefed that Infantino secured pledged letters of support from roughly 200 of the 211 member federations, though those letters are now expected to be withdrawn across Europe, with Wales becoming the first federation to announce a reversal according to AP reports.
The candidate deadline is set for November 18 for an election scheduled four months later in Morocco according to AP reports.
