Volkswagen joint venture FAW-Volkswagen officially revealed the Jetta M6 electric sedan in China as its first battery-electric vehicle. Measuring 4,806 mm long with a 2,820 mm wheelbase, the mid-size BEV arrives amid a domestic shift from petrol cars to new energy vehicles.
The Volkswagen brand Jetta, originally established in China in 2019 through the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture to manufacture affordable petrol-powered automobiles, is expanding its product lineup. While the brand has historically relied on internal combustion engines built on the MQB platform—including the VA3 and VA7 sedans alongside the VS5, VS7, and VS8 crossovers—declining domestic demand for petrol vehicles has prompted a pivot toward new energy options.
In response to this market shift, the brand is introducing four new electric models to the Chinese market, with the Jetta M6 serving as its inaugural battery-electric vehicle.
Exterior Design and Dimensions of the Jetta M6
The Jetta M6 adopts a mid-size sedan body style characterized by a sleek roofline, sharp headlights, and a continuous taillight unit across the rear. Official images highlight a top-trim model finished in purple, equipped with a surround-view camera system and front and rear parking sensors.
The vehicle measures 4,806 mm in length, 1,868 mm in width, and 1,500 mm in height, featuring a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. It rides on 17-inch wheels as standard equipment, while top-tier variants upgrade to 18-inch wheels. Additional exterior features include semi-hidden or recessed door handles, an active air intake integrated into the front bumper, and a large panoramic sunroof.
Interior Layout and Technological Features
While official manufacturer images of the interior remained initially unreleased, spy photographs reveal a modern cabin layout centered around a two-spoke steering wheel, a tiered two-story central tunnel, and a large infotainment display screen. Traditional instrument clusters are absent, suggesting vehicle data may be projected via a head-up display system. Cabin amenities set for inclusion feature ventilated seats, a dual wireless charging pad, and a panoramic roof.
Platform Architecture and Powertrain Specifications
Underneath its exterior, the Jetta M6 is built on Volkswagen’s modular electric architecture known as CMP, or China Main Platform, which was developed by the German automaker’s local division alongside Chinese partners SAIC and FAW. The vehicle utilizes a single electric motor mounted on the front axle.
Powertrain output varies by configuration. Standard models feature an electric motor delivering 113 kW, equivalent to 152 or 154 horsepower depending on reporting translations. A more powerful variant increases output to 145 kW, or 194 to 197 horsepower, lifting the top speed from 166 km/h up to 172 km/h. Curb weight ranges between 1,557 kg and 1,628 kg.
Market Positioning and Competitive Landscape
Positioned as a mid-size BEV, the Jetta M6 enters a crowded and rapidly intensifying segment in China. It is set to compete directly against models such as the Xpeng Mona M03—surpassing that rival in length by 26 mm—and the MG 07 sedan, for which state-owned automaker SAIC recently initiated pre-sales.
Production will take place at the FAW-Volkswagen joint venture facility located in Chengdu. Market release is anticipated later this year, with an estimated price point hovering around 100 thousand yuan (14.8 thousand dollars), though comprehensive details regarding battery capacity and driving range remain undisclosed.
