RB Leipzig managing director Marcel Schäfer dismissed reports that Yan Diomandé’s move to Real Madrid is finalized. Speaking to Sky Sport Germany, Schäfer rejected transfer claims from pundits while the Ivorian forward recovers from injury amidst a separate agency dispute.
The summer transfer window’s most talked-about saga has hit a wall of direct pushback from club leadership. While headlines proclaimed a done deal for the 19-year-old Ivory Coast international, RB Leipzig’s front office insists the parties are nowhere near the finish line.

The friction began when high-profile transfer pundit Fabrizio Romano posted his trademark ‘Here We Go’ slogan on X, declaring that an agreement had been reached between Leipzig and Real Madrid for a fee exceeding €100 million. According to that report, the young winger was slated to fly to Madrid for medical tests and sign a contract running until June 2031.
Leipzig’s leadership reacted sharply to the premature celebration. Sporting director Marcel Schäfer hit out at the reporting during an interview with Sky Germany, making it clear that external announcements bore little resemblance to reality.
“It is clear that some self-proclaimed signing experts reported a few days ago that the agreement was closed or they gave him the ‘here we go’. It’s just not like that. We haven’t reached that stage yet.”

Behind the public disagreement lies a significant valuation gap. Real Madrid initially tabled a €100 million bid that Leipzig swiftly rejected. While Madrid subsequently returned with a revised proposal closer to €120 million, the Bundesliga club has held firm on a valuation in the €130 to €135 million range. Having acquired Diomandé from CD Leganés for just €20 million in July 2025 under a contract running to June 2030, Leipzig holds immense leverage.
Agency Disputes and Isolated Training Complicate the Santiago Bernabéu Switch
Aside from the ongoing financial haggling between clubs, the transfer faces an unexpected legal entanglement off the pitch. Diomandé recently switched representation, moving from Maxidel Management—led by former player Max Gradel—to Roc Nation, the entertainment agency founded by Jay-Z. In response, Maxidel Management lodged a formal complaint with FIFA, creating a bureaucratic hold-up over future commission structures.
Despite the legal wrangling, Schäfer expressed confidence that the management shift would not sink the potential agreement. Schäfer noted that Leipzig’s official point of contact is now Roc Nation, as communicated directly by the player.

Meanwhile, the player himself remains sidelined from normal team activities. After returning from an extended summer break following his World Cup exertions, Diomandé reported in sick, missed a pre-season friendly against SC Verl, and was left behind as the first-team squad traveled to their intensive training camp in Austria. Club officials attribute his absence to medical reasons and illness, though his individual training regime also serves to protect a prized asset from injury risk while negotiations unfold.
From Daytona Beach Trials to a La Liga Valuation
The fee commanded by Diomandé reflects one of the most unorthodox rises in modern football. Just four years ago, at age 15, the Ivory Coast native arrived at DME Academy in Daytona Beach, Florida, speaking no English. He starred for semi-professional side AS Frenzi in the United Premier Soccer League during the 2023 season, winning the Golden Boot before unsuccessful trials with several European clubs left his future uncertain.
His fortunes changed when Blue Crow Sports founder Jeff Luhnow—who purchased Spanish club Leganés—viewed footage of the youngster and brought him to Spain. After signing in November 2024 and joining the club in 2025, Diomandé tore up a training session against Leganés’ senior squad, prompting manager Borja Jiménez to fast-track his ascent.
Following his subsequent €20 million switch to Leipzig, Diomandé enjoyed a breakout 2025–26 campaign. He contributed 13 goals and nine assists across 36 appearances, helped Leipzig finish third in the Bundesliga, and led the German top-flight in both total dribbles (118) and take-on ending carries (104). If Real Madrid ultimately meets Leipzig’s demands and finalizes the transfer, the fee will establish Diomandé as the most expensive player in Real Madrid’s history.
