Russia’s defense ministry has announced that its armed forces are preparing massive strikes
against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, according to CNBC. The Russian military framed the planned large-scale attacks on power plants and energy facilities as a response to ongoing Ukrainian drone campaigns and long-range strikes targeting Russian territory, fuel sites, and energy complexes, as reported by Euronews.com.
Russia Announces Preparations for Massive Strikes on Ukraine Power Grid
The announced retaliation revives widespread concerns over a potential repeat of previous winter bombardments. During the prior winter, Moscow repeatedly struck Ukrainian power facilities, severely damaging the nation’s grid and leaving millions of residents without heat or electricity during sub-zero temperatures, as detailed by The Guardian. Officials, drone manufacturers, and security analysts have cautioned that the upcoming heating season could pose severe challenges amid acute shortages of air defense equipment.
Deadly Warehouse Explosion in Myla and Escalating Casualties
The announcement from Moscow follows a devastating strike on a warehouse facility in the village of Myla, located in the Bucha district west of Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that the death toll from the Friday evening strike rose to 38 people, with four individuals remaining missing and 20 others injured.
According to Ukrainian officials, the targeted structure was storing ammunition, which triggered massive detonations, secondary explosions, and fierce fires that swept through nearby residential areas. The blast damaged approximately 50 buildings and forced the evacuation of more than 380 local residents. The incident stands as one of the deadliest single events in Kyiv’s suburbs since the full-scale invasion began, prompting Ukrainian prosecutors to open a criminal negligence investigation into why explosives were kept in close proximity to civilian housing. Among the fatalities was Taras Didych, the mayor of nearby Dmytrivka.

Both nations have escalated long-range aerial bombardments, hitting warehouses, refineries, ports, and urban centers with rising civilian casualties. Ukraine has systematically targeted Russian oil refineries, logistics hubs, and energy assets—including the Kirishi oil refinery in Russia’s Leningrad region—to pressure Moscow economically.
Meanwhile, Russian aerial attacks have continued across multiple regions:
- A strike on Kyiv on Saturday resulted in the death of a 2-year-old girl and injuries to 12 others, according to Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko.
- In Bilbasovka in eastern Ukraine, Russian bombing of private homes killed a 13-year-old and an adult.
- A missile strike on Belgorod near the Russian border killed two people and injured 16, following a Ukrainian hit on a commercial facility and local warehouses, according to acting governor Alexander Shuvayev.
- An attack on a mine in the Russian-controlled part of the Luhansk region killed one person, according to regional governor Leonid Pasechnik.
