Nicolas Cage’s coastal Malibu mansion faced an emergency on Tuesday morning when a large sinkhole opened directly outside the property after a driveway collapsed.

According to SoCalGas, utility crews managed to secure the gas leak several hours after the initial break. However, natural gas service had to be temporarily disconnected along an 85-foot (26-metre) stretch of the road as a vital safeguard against ongoing coastal erosion in the area.
Property records indicate that the estate changed hands in a 2024 transaction. At the time of that sale, the former owner confirmed to the New York Times that the Oscar-winning actor was the buyer. Representatives for Cage did not immediately reply to requests for comment regarding the structural damage.
Coastal Flooding and Regional Emergency Declarations
The dramatic driveway failure happened during a Los Angeles coastal flooding advisory driven by the lingering effects of Tropical Storm Marie, which had previously strengthened into a hurricane. Although Marie remained well offshore, it churned up heavy rain and high waves across Southern California throughout the holiday weekend, accelerating unstable ground conditions along the beachfront.
In response to the mounting hazards, officials from the city of Malibu declared at least five homes on the affected street unsafe for entry on Tuesday. The city issued a stark warning regarding the compromised geography, stating: Emergency personnel access is severely constrained and may be impassable, due to the large portion of the road that has collapsed.
Furthermore, the local administration emphasized the ongoing peril:
The intact portion of the roadway is too narrow to accommodate emergency response vehicles, including fire engines and other large apparatus, creating a substantial risk to public safety and emergency response capabilities.
Beyond the gas shutoff, city officials warned that water service might also be discontinued until further notice, leaving residents facing indefinite evacuation orders while engineers evaluate the stability of the coastal bluff.
