/ About 50 members of the ISIS terrorist organization were killed by an anti-armor landmine explosion in the Lake Chad region in northeastern Nigeria.

Sources reported that two trucks loaded with militants from ISIS in West Africa were driving near the village of Arena Masalachi in Borno State on Sunday morning when the mine exploded, killing most of those on board.

Babakura Kolo, a leader in a local militia that supports the army in its fight against the jihadists, said, “The two trucks were loaded with fighters when the truck in front collided with the mine and exploded along with the second truck that was driving very close behind it.”

He added that the explosion led to “the killing of about fifty jihadists who were on board the two trucks and the wounding of others.”

Another militia leader confirmed the explosion and the toll, as Ibrahim Liman said that the jihadists were on their way to launch an attack when the explosion occurred.

He added: “We believe that the jihadists planted this mine some time ago to target Nigerian army forces that conduct regular patrols in the area, but they ended up falling into the trap they set.”

The Islamic State in West Africa, which split from the jihadist group Boko Haram in 2016, is active in the Lake Chad region, where it is waging battles with both the army and Boko Haram.

Both ISIS in West Africa and the Boko Haram group are planting landmines on roads in Nigeria to target military and civilian convoys as part of the insurgency that jihadists have been waging in this country for 14 years, which has left about 40,000 dead and more than two million displaced.
