/ The lawyer of Benjamin Mendy, the former Manchester City defender, announced on Monday that the player had filed a lawsuit against the club competing in the English Premier League, due to not paying his salary for nearly two years after he was accused of committing sexual crimes in 2021.

The former French international filed a lawsuit demanding “millions of sterling pounds” before the labor court, seeking to recover financial dues until the end of his contract, which ended in June with the English champion.

A British court acquitted Mendy last July of two charges of rape and attempted rape, and last January, Mendy was found not guilty of six charges of rape and one of sexual assault.

Nick De Marco, Mendy’s lawyer, confirmed in a statement sent via email to Reuters that he had filed a case “to demand millions of pounds due to illegal deductions from financial dues.”

The statement added, “Manchester City did not pay any salaries to Mr. Mendy as of September 2021 after he was accused of committing various crimes, all of which he was later acquitted of, until the end of his contract in June 2023.”

Mendy, who currently plays for Lorient, a competitor in the French First Division, joined Man City from Monaco in 2017 for about 52 million pounds ($64.80 million).
