A member of the administrative body of the Police Club, Tahseen Al-Yasiri, told the (INA): “The police basketball team’s match with its counterpart Zakho in the club hall in Dohuk Governorate witnessed a development represented by the club’s fans attacking our players.”
He added, “The fans descended on the match arena and severely beat the local and professional players before the end of the match, while the security force charged with protecting the match hall was unable to stand up to the fans who besieged our players for more than two hours without deterrence.”
He continued, “The players suffered serious injuries, including the player Hassan Ali,” noting, “The club management appealed to the Dohuk Governorate and the Basketball Association, but nothing changed.”
He stressed, “As a result of the developments in the situation, the club’s management sent an appeal to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Interior, and after these two appeals, the players’ exit was secured through the wheels of a special security force assigned to follow up on the matter. The players were delivered to a safe place where they reside, and they will be returned to Baghdad in the next few hours.”
The match was stopped 6 minutes before its end, as the result indicated that Al-Shorta led over Zakho 69-61, before Zakho fans took to the match ground.
