WAN-IFRA Launches NextGen AI Leaders Programme to Empower Newsroom Innovation
The future of journalism is being reshaped by artificial intelligence, and a new initiative aims to ensure emerging leaders are equipped to navigate this transformation. The World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has announced the NextGen AI Leaders Programme, a tuition-free, 12-week program designed to cultivate a new generation of media executives capable of responsibly integrating AI into newsroom operations. This program directly addresses the growing need for skilled leadership in an era where AI is no longer a futuristic concept, but a present-day reality impacting news organizations of all sizes.
“We must proactively prepare for the opportunities and challenges AI presents,” states Stig Ørskov, CEO of WAN-IFRA. “Investing in the development of diverse and capable leaders is paramount to ensuring journalistic excellence and the long-term sustainability of news media businesses.”
Supported by the Google News Initiative (GNI), the NextGen AI Leaders Programme will select 24 promising news professionals aged 25 to 40 from across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). These individuals, currently in leadership roles within product, audience, commercial, and editorial departments at small, mid-sized, or local news companies, will receive intensive training and mentorship.
Jaffer Zaidi, VP Global News Partnerships at Google, emphasizes the importance of adaptation: “As audience preferences and technology continue to evolve, upskilling news leaders to effectively utilize AI tools is crucial for deeper audience engagement and compelling digital storytelling. This collaboration with WAN-IFRA builds upon our ongoing commitment to the news industry.”
Navigating the AI Revolution in News Media
The rapid advancement of AI presents both immense opportunities and significant challenges for the news industry. From automating routine tasks to enhancing content creation and personalization, AI has the potential to revolutionize how news is gathered, produced, and delivered. However, realizing these benefits requires a workforce equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement AI responsibly and ethically.
The NextGen AI Leaders Programme isn’t simply about teaching participants *how* to use AI tools; it’s about fostering a strategic mindset. Participants will engage in applied experimentation, tackling real-world management challenges through structured coursework and personalized mentorship. The program’s hybrid format – combining live and online sessions – aims to unlock innovation and build AI fluency, empowering participants to shape the future of AI within their organizations.
Facilitating this journey will be a team of experienced professionals: Anita Zielina, CEO of Better Leaders Lab, specializing in organizational change and leadership development; and Kaveh Waddell and Patrick Swanson, co-founders of the AI consulting lab Verso, experts in AI training and implementation. The GNI’s contribution includes specialized sessions focused on Google’s AI products and their practical applications across various newsroom functions.
Did You Know? AI-powered tools are already being used in newsrooms for tasks like transcription, translation, fact-checking, and content recommendation, freeing up journalists to focus on more complex and creative work.
The program’s curriculum is designed to move beyond theoretical understanding and into practical application. Participants will be challenged to design AI system prototypes and workflows tailored to their specific newsroom environments. This hands-on approach ensures that the skills acquired are immediately transferable and impactful.
But what are the biggest hurdles news organizations face when adopting AI? Is it a lack of technical expertise, budgetary constraints, or perhaps concerns about ethical implications? These are the types of questions the NextGen AI Leaders Programme aims to address.
The inaugural cohort will commence their training on April 14th with an in-person workshop held alongside WAN-IFRA’s Frankfurt AI Forum. Participants will also have the opportunity to network and share insights at WAN-IFRA’s World News Media Congress in Marseille from June 1-3.
