The Punjab provincial government announced its new airline, Air Punjab, will begin operations in April, despite ongoing controversy surrounding the reported purchase of a luxury jet for Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
Air Punjab Launch Details
Officials stated that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is expediting preparations for the airline’s launch. The airline will initially operate with a fleet of seven passenger aircraft, serving only domestic routes for the first two years, with plans for international operations to follow.
The Punjab cabinet approved the establishment of Air Punjab (Private) Limited in November last year, with Chief Minister Nawaz presiding over the meeting. The company was incorporated with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan on July 24, 2025, at the Lahore Company Registration Office.
The chief minister’s existing helicopter will be incorporated into Air Punjab’s fleet as its first operational asset. Officials emphasized that no separate aircraft will be purchased for the chief minister or other VIPs, and that they will travel on regularly scheduled Air Punjab flights.
Financial Strategy and Controversy
Officials stated a strategy has been finalized to ensure the airline does not burden the provincial exchequer, with all aircraft operating on a fully commercial basis. The full commercial fare will be paid whenever the chief minister uses an Air Punjab aircraft.
The announcement comes amid social media criticism regarding the reported acquisition of a business jet. Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari rejected claims that public funds were used to purchase a luxury aircraft for official use, stating the aircraft is part of the fleet being developed for Air Punjab and not intended for personal or VIP use.
Former federal finance minister Miftah Ismail challenged the government’s explanation, arguing that commercial airlines do not typically induct luxury business jets due to economic viability. He suggested the government is attempting to justify extravagant spending by linking the jet to Air Punjab, claiming the 16-seat aircraft is intended for the chief minister and VIP travel.
Social media users have also compared the situation to the recent privatization of Pakistan International Airlines, noting that the Punjab government reportedly spent more than the Rs10 billion received from the sale on a single luxury jet.
Details of the Aircraft
The aircraft in question is a Gulfstream G500, valued at approximately Rs10–11 billion. It is currently registered in the United States under registration number N144S and has not yet been registered in Pakistan.
The provincial government has also advertised vacancies for the airline’s senior management, including chief executive officer, chief operating officer, and chief financial officer, indicating progress toward operational readiness.
