Alicia Richardson Walks Nijmeegse Vierdaagse to Honor Daughter’s Survival

Alicia Richardson, an Almeerse resident, is walking the Nijmeegse Vierdaagse to honor her one-year-old daughter, Mabel, who survived a critical birth at 26 weeks. Richardson, who is also fundraising for the Stichting Vluchteling-Student, aims to complete the 160-kilometer trek despite the emotional challenge of leaving her hospitalized child behind.

For Alicia Richardson, the four-day, 160-kilometer Nijmeegse Vierdaagse is not merely a test of physical endurance; it is a promise made during the most uncertain year of her life. As she prepares to navigate the route, her motivation remains anchored in the survival of her daughter, Mabel, who was born prematurely at 26 weeks, weighing just 455 grams.

A Medical Crisis and a Promise

The journey to this year’s event began in the wake of a traumatic pregnancy. Richardson, 22, faced severe complications, including hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) and kidney stones, before being diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. Despite a prior medical assessment at age 16 that suggested she might be infertile due to severe endometriosis, Richardson became pregnant, only to face a medical emergency while traveling in Spain.

After returning to the Netherlands, her condition deteriorated rapidly. Richardson reported symptoms including blurred vision and dangerously high blood pressure—160 over 110. Following an emergency caesarean section, Mabel was born at 26 weeks. The infant’s condition was critical, requiring ventilation and intensive care for an infection developed shortly after birth.

“Maar zelfs met haar lage gewicht van 455 gram is ze er gewoon bovenop gekomen. Haar doorzettingsvermogen heeft mij enorm geïnspireerd.”

According to Omroep Flevoland, Richardson viewed her daughter’s survival as a miracle. However, Mabel’s health remains fragile. She currently struggles with chronic lung disease, motor delays, and severe feeding complications, requiring 23 hours of sonde nutrition daily. Mabel is receiving care at the Flevoziekenhuis while awaiting a transfer to the Amsterdam UMC for specialized treatment.

Training and the Stichting Vluchteling-Student

Richardson began her preparations for the Vierdaagse in December. Her training regimen evolved from short five-kilometer walks to full 40-kilometer distances, often traversing the nature areas of Almere and the dikes. Despite her background in physically demanding environments—having previously explored mountains in Iceland and jungles in Peru—she acknowledges the unique challenge of four consecutive days of walking.

Her participation serves a dual purpose. Beyond personal reflection, she is raising funds for the Stichting Vluchteling-Student, an organization that provides financial support and resources to refugee students. Richardson noted that the perseverance shown by these students mirrors the resilience she has witnessed in her daughter.

“Ze hebben zoveel doorzettingsvermogen. Ze vluchten voor oorlog en bouwen hier opnieuw een leven op. De stichting helpt hen met bijvoorbeeld boeken of geven financiële ondersteuning, zodat ze naar school kunnen en hun passie kunnen volgen.”

Emotional Stakes at the Finish Line

As the event commences, the reality of Mabel’s ongoing hospitalization creates a difficult emotional landscape for Richardson. Her partner is currently managing Mabel’s care in the hospital, and her sister is beginning a chemotherapy regimen this Wednesday, meaning no family members will be available to greet Richardson at the finish line.

“Waar ik het meest tegenop zie, is de binnenkomst. Mijn zusje begint woensdag aan een chemokuur en mijn partner moet bij Mabel blijven in het ziekenhuis. Er staat dus niemand op me te wachten bij de finish van de Vierdaagse. Dat vind ik wel moeilijk.”

Despite the personal hardship, Richardson remains focused on the task. Spectators and supporters can follow her progress through the 4Daagse app using her registration number, 798267.
