Alphabet Shares Fall as AI Infrastructure Costs Drive Up Spending Forecasts

Alphabet shares dropped more than 6% on Thursday following the company’s second-quarter earnings report, as investors reacted to a significant increase in capital spending forecasts directed toward artificial intelligence infrastructure. The decline follows a 1.5% drop in the company’s stock on Wednesday, reflecting broader investor anxiety regarding the mounting costs required to sustain the current AI boom.

Alphabet Shares Fall Amid Rising AI Infrastructure Costs

According to Reuters, Alphabet burned $5.9 billion in cash during the second quarter. The company subsequently raised its capital expenditure forecast for 2026 to a range of $195 billion to $205 billion, up from its previous projection of $180 billion to $190 billion. Management warned that spending is expected to rise further in 2027.

The Mechanics of AI Spending

Alphabet executives stated that the increased capital expenditure is primarily driven by the need to accelerate the delivery of computing capacity to meet growing demand. The company currently maintains that it lacks sufficient computing capacity to satisfy the AI-related demand it is observing.

The financial pressure is intensified by the high costs of infrastructure. As noted by CNBC, analysts are increasingly scrutinizing whether AI revenue can grow faster than capital expenditures, depreciation, and operating costs. While Google Cloud achieved 82% growth in the second quarter, reaching $24.8 billion in revenue, the company’s efforts to serve clients include renting data-center capacity from other firms, a practice that executives acknowledged will hurt margins.

Record Profits and Investment Gains

Despite the concerns over cash flow, Alphabet reported a record-breaking second quarter in terms of net income. The company grew its bottom line by 298% year-over-year, totaling $112.1 billion. A significant portion of this figure—$99 billion—originated from unrealized and realized gains on equity securities within Alphabet’s investment portfolio, according to Fortune.

These gains were largely attributed to the soaring valuations of companies such as Anthropic and SpaceX. The investment in Anthropic, which began in April 2023, has grown to $13.3 billion, with additional commitments of up to $30 billion. This relationship has drawn attention due to its circular nature: Alphabet invests in Anthropic, which in turn commits to purchasing at least five gigawatts of computing capacity from Google Cloud, thereby contributing to the cloud segment’s revenue growth.

Market Sentiment and Future Outlook

The market reaction to Alphabet’s spending has been cautious. Ben Barringer, head of technology research at Quilter Cheviot, noted that a lack of standout product releases and delays to the Gemini 3.5 Pro model have raised questions regarding whether Alphabet’s investments are translating into a clear competitive advantage.

Alphabet Falls as $205 Billion Spending Plan Fuels AI Cost Fear

The concern is not limited to Alphabet. Investors are bracing for upcoming results from other major technology firms, with analysts suggesting that the risk remains tilted toward further spending increases across the sector. As providers continue to invest heavily in capacity, some experts warn that cloud capacity may become increasingly interchangeable, potentially forcing companies to spend more while accepting lower returns.

Alphabet’s broader investment strategy also includes significant holdings in other sectors. As reported by Finviz, the company maintains a stake in AST SpaceMobile, holding more than 8.9 million shares, which represents its largest portfolio holding. However, the immediate focus for Wall Street remains the capital-intensive nature of the company’s AI infrastructure and the resulting impact on free cash flow.
