Scott Base Job Openings
Antarctica New Zealand is currently recruiting for a variety of roles to support operations at Scott Base. Positions available include medics, chefs, electricians, and engineers.
According to Antarctica NZ chief executive and scientific advisor Professor Jordy Hendrikx, prior experience in Antarctica is not required. “Basically, we are running a small town down there. We have to manage our own water, we have to manage our own power, manage our own sewage and also all the food and all the services will be provided to support science,” he said.
Hendrikx emphasized the importance of support roles in enabling the organization’s scientific mission. The majority of positions are for the ‘summer season’, which runs from September to February, during which the sun does not set in Antarctica.
Approximately 12 staff members remain at Scott Base throughout the winter, constituting a 13-month commitment. The positions are highly sought after, representing a unique opportunity for many.
Successful applicants will possess relevant qualifications and a positive, collaborative attitude. “We need that real can-do attitude and a willingness to be part of a family, and to work down there and to live down there as part of a really tight community,” Hendrikx said. “It’s more than a job.”
