Minister of Home Affairs Muhammad Tito Karnavian has directed the National Border Management Agency (BNPP) to implement a border area housing program targeting the renovation of 15,000 uninhabitable houses across Indonesia’s frontier regions.
- Target: 15,000 uninhabitable house units (increased from an initial 10,000).
- Execution: BNPP mapping coordinated with the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP) and Statistics Indonesia (BPS).
- Objective: Reinforcing national sovereignty and social welfare in border zones.
The renovation initiative is managed by the Ministry of Housing and Settlement Areas (PKP). Karnavian, who also serves as the Head of BNPP, noted that the original target of 10,000 units has been increased to 15,000.
He urged BNPP staff to execute the program with dedication and tasked the agency with mapping suitable border regions to determine the specific number of units required in each area.
Enhancing the Border Area Housing Program
To ensure the program is accurately targeted, the BNPP will coordinate with Statistics Indonesia (BPS). The agency will utilize the National Social and Economic Single Data (DTSEN) to identify recipients based on specific social and economic criteria.
Karnavian believes that improving the welfare of these communities will naturally foster stronger nationalism. He stated that border residents serve as the frontline defenders of national sovereignty and act as a critical buffer zone for defense.
The ministers recently visited Siau Tagulandang Biaro (Sitaro) in North Sulawesi, where they distributed 1,000 housing units. During the visit, Karnavian and PKP Minister Maruarar Sirait also reviewed the conditions of residents impacted by recent flash floods.
The initiative follows a directive from President Prabowo Subianto to strengthen regional resilience and ensure the government’s presence is felt in the nation’s most remote areas.
