Anthropic Launches Claude Opus 5 for Coding and Knowledge Work

Anthropic launched Claude Opus 5 on Friday, a new artificial intelligence model designed for daily coding and knowledge work. Priced at $5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens, the model provides performance near the company’s top-tier Fable 5 while implementing more refined cybersecurity safeguards.

Performance and Market Positioning

Anthropic is positioning Opus 5 as a high-efficiency alternative to its flagship Fable 5, targeting enterprise customers and developers who require reliable reasoning for everyday tasks. The model outperforms its predecessor, Opus 4.8, and in several benchmarks, it even surpasses Fable 5. The company reports that Opus 5 achieved a 43.3 percent score on the Frontier-Bench agentic terminal coding benchmark, significantly ahead of Fable 5’s 33.7 percent and more than double the 18.7 percent recorded by Opus 4.8.

Despite these gains, Anthropic officials maintain a clear distinction between the models. Fable 5 for your most ambitious work, the days-long autonomous projects nothing could take on before… Sonnet 5 for work you run at scale, where speed and cost per call decide what ships. Haiku 4.5 for subagents and instant answers, the company stated. As Dianne Penn, Anthropic’s head of product management for research, explained to CNBC, the goal is to provide value to enterprises that need quality without the price of experimentation. Enterprises, in our feedback and with our customer base, are looking for value, Penn said.

Refined Cybersecurity Safeguards

The release of Opus 5 follows a period of intense scrutiny regarding AI safety. In June, Anthropic temporarily disabled access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 to comply with government export control directives related to national security. To address these concerns, Opus 5 features updated safety classifiers. While the model remains restricted in areas like exploit generation, Anthropic expects its safety classifiers to engage 85 percent less often than they do for Fable 5.

To mitigate the disruption caused by these safeguards, Anthropic is introducing an Automatic Fallbacks feature. This beta tool allows API users to automatically route requests to a less powerful model if a prompt triggers a safety block, ensuring the user receives a functional response rather than an error message. Theverge notes that the company is actively collaborating with government partners to conduct independent testing of the new model.

Pricing and Enterprise Integration

Opus 5 maintains the same pricing structure as the previous Opus 4.8—$5 per million input tokens and $25 per million output tokens—which Anthropic emphasizes is half the price of Fable 5. This pricing strategy is intended to address the growing demand for cost-effective AI tools. For high-speed requirements, the company is also piloting a Fast mode in research preview, which provides increased speed at double the standard cost.

The model is now rolling out across Anthropic’s platforms and is available for enterprise integration. GitHub has already added support for the model in its ecosystem, including the Copilot CLI and Visual Studio Code. As The GitHub Blog confirmed, administrators must manually enable the Claude Opus 5 policy within Copilot settings to provide access to users. The rollout is gradual, with full availability expected for Copilot Pro+, Max, Business, and Enterprise tiers.

Industry Context and Future Development

The launch comes amid stiff competition from rivals, including OpenAI and various Chinese startups. When questioned about the competitive landscape, particularly the Kimi K3 model from Moonshot, Anthropic’s Dianne Penn emphasized the uncertainty surrounding the performance of open-weight models in real-world scenarios. Beyond the coding benchmarks, the company reports that Opus 5 scored three times higher than the next best model on the ARC-AGI 3 evaluation of novel problem-solving. Whether these results translate into the long-term enterprise adoption the company seeks remains the primary question, as customers evaluate the trade-offs between bounded tasks and the more autonomous capabilities still reserved for Fable 5.
