President Donald Trump intensified his anti-Muslim rhetoric during a Sunday rally in Port Huron, Michigan, portraying Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed as a national security threat and demanding he pass through metal detectors at the U.S. Capitol if elected.
Trump Targets El-Sayed at Port Huron Rally
Standing in the Canadian border city about an hour north of Detroit, Trump launched a series of sharp verbal jabs against the former Detroit health official, who is running in a closely watched race to fill the seat of retiring Democratic Senator Gary Peters. I’m here to keep a jihadist Muslim Brotherhood member from becoming a United States senator, Trump said, according to Yahoo. The president asserted that El-Sayed should never be allowed inside the halls of our great, beautiful Capitol building in Washington, D.C.,
and claimed that the Democrat would have access to classified government secrets if he wins.
CFJC Today noted that the rally took place near communities where Trump made significant gains among Arab American voters in 2024.
Republicans Link El-Sayed to Muslim Brotherhood Without Evidence
The Republican strategy in the final weeks of the midterm campaign has frequently sought to link El-Sayed to the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist movement with branches designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government. However, there is no evidence linking El-Sayed to the organization. During a recent town hall in Caro, Michigan, El-Sayed explicitly disavowed the Muslim Brotherhood when questioned by an attendee, stating, You’re asking the question because implicitly you assume that I’ll have dual loyalties.

El-Sayed’s campaign has strongly rejected the accusations. Cole Wozniak, a spokesperson for El-Sayed, responded to Trump’s comments in a statement: “While they lie and resort to desperate, bad faith attacks, Abdul remains laser focused on his plans to bring down costs and stand up to the chaos and corruption in Washington.” El-Sayed has previously called attacks on his loyalty shameful.
Arab American Ally Issues Sharp Rebuke
Trump’s remarks drew an immediate and severe backlash from within his own political coalition. Bahbah, whose group changed its name to Arab Americans for Peace, stated bluntly, “The president’s statements are out of line.” He added, “They are crossing a red line. They are racist.”
