The African Union Commission has reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia, rejecting any recognition of Somaliland as an independent entity.
African Union Rejects Somaliland Independence
Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep concern regarding recent developments related to Somaliland. The Commission unequivocally restates the African Union’s longstanding position, based on principles within its Constitutive Act, particularly respecting borders established at independence as defined in a 1964 Organization of African Unity decision.
The Chairperson firmly rejects any initiatives or actions that would recognize Somaliland as independent, maintaining that it remains an integral part of the Federal Republic of Somalia. Any attempt to undermine Somalia’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity is considered a violation of fundamental African Union principles and could set a destabilizing precedent for the continent.
The African Union continues to fully support the Somali authorities in their efforts to consolidate peace, strengthen state institutions, and promote inclusive governance.
