An elderly Auckland couple were startled to discover a stranger asleep in their bedroom in the early hours of the morning. The incident occurred at their home in Bucklands Beach, eastern Auckland.
Intruder Discovered in Auckland Home
The couple, both in their 80s, were awakened when the husband went to use the restroom and nearly tripped over a woman on the floor, according to a report from 1News. Initially believing his wife had fallen, he quickly realized the person was an unknown woman with a tattoo.
“I woke up, and I saw this face looking at me,” the woman told 1News. She questioned how the stranger gained entry to their home, noting the gate was locked, but hadn’t considered the possibility of entry through a window.
The stranger was reportedly not aggressive, simply “mumbling things I couldn’t understand” and appearing to want to leave, the woman said.
The couple attempted to guide the woman to the front door, where she unlocked and exited the house. She then jumped over their electric fence and fled.
“She just vanished,” the woman said.
Police were called and arrived with a dog handler who had been searching for the woman since earlier in the day. Additional officers responded, but the couple had not received any further updates as of the report.
The couple has since installed window stays but expressed feeling less safe. “I’m not happy about maybe living where I am now because I feel I’m cut off,” the woman said. She emphasized the potential danger, stating, “It’s silly, it’s something that probably won’t happen again, but you don’t know.”
Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident and have identified a person of interest who is currently in custody on unrelated charges. Charges are expected to be filed in connection with this incident, according to Senior Sergeant Neil Tapley.
