The BBC has reached an agreement with an Israeli family who survived the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attacks, following a journalistic team’s unauthorized entry into their damaged home.
BBC Reaches Settlement with Israeli Family
A BBC News crew, including International Editor Jeremy Bowen, filmed inside the home of an Israeli family on the Gaza border in the days following the attacks.
The family, from the village of Netiv HaAsara, said the crew filmed personal photographs of their children at a time when many friends and relatives were still unsure if they had survived. Tzeela Horenstein, a member of the family, stated that gunmen threw a grenade at her husband, Simon, during the Hamas attack.
Horenstein described the intrusion as a further violation, stating, “Not only did terrorists break into our home and try to murder us, but then the BBC crew entered again, this time with a camera as a weapon, without permission or consent. It was another intrusion into our lives. We felt that everything that was still under our control had been taken from us.”
The BBC paid a financial settlement of £28,000 to the family, according to reports. A BBC spokesperson said the corporation generally does not comment on specific legal issues but confirmed they were pleased to have reached an agreement in the case.
The Oct. 7 attacks, led by Hamas, resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages in southern Israel. Since then, more than 71,260 people have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza, according to the territory’s Hamas-run health ministry.
