BNPB prioritizes logistics for remote islands after North Maluku quake

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is prioritizing logistical support to remote islands in North Maluku province, including Mayau and Tifure, following a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on April 2. The agency is also providing trauma healing assistance to affected residents.

Earthquake Response in North Maluku

BNPB is coordinating the deployment of a State Search and Rescue (SAR) Vessel to distribute essential supplies, according to BNPB Director for Regional Handling I Agus Riyanto. Trauma healing is being provided by the Social Affairs Office, with support from the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the Police.

The central government has affirmed its full support for the emergency response efforts in North Maluku. BNPB emphasized that repairs to homes damaged by the earthquake or social conflict will follow established regulations.

North Maluku Deputy Governor Sarbin Sehe highlighted the need for swift and coordinated action in addressing the earthquake’s impact. The quake affected four districts and two cities, encompassing 27 sub-districts and 46 villages, including Ternate City and Tidore City, as well as West Halmahera, North Halmahera, Central Halmahera, and South Halmahera districts.

Preliminary data indicates no fatalities, with one minor injury reported. Approximately two thousand people have been affected, and 1,107 individuals, representing 113 households, remain in evacuation shelters.

Damage to physical infrastructure includes 99 severely damaged houses, 66 moderately damaged houses, and 139 lightly damaged houses. Government agencies remain committed to serving the public despite the national holiday.
