Body of Missing Five-Year-Old Reo Tanaka Recovered from Japanese River

The discovery brings a tragic development to a search effort that spanned nearly four weeks. Reo Tanaka was last seen by his parents at approximately 3:30 p.m. on June 21, while the family was visiting a hot spring facility in the Kagoshima Prefecture. According to Thenightly, the parents had stepped into a changing room for a moment, leaving the boy with his two-year-old brother. When they returned, the five-year-old had vanished.

Following the disappearance, staff at the resort alerted the police, initiating a large-scale search involving roughly 100 police officers and firefighters. The search efforts faced environmental challenges, including heavy rainfall that caused the Amori River’s water levels to rise, forcing authorities to pause operations at various times.

The body was located on the morning of July 17, less than one kilometre from the Kareigawa no Yu resort. While official identification is still underway, authorities believe it to be the missing child. Throughout the month-long ordeal, Reo’s mother had expressed a desperate hope for his return, telling outlets that she wanted her son brought home no matter what condition he was in.

The resort, located in the city of Kirishima, is part of a region widely known for its hot springs. The investigation remains active as authorities work to confirm the identity of the body and piece together the final moments before the child went missing from the private bath area.
