Bangladesh is finalizing a $3.7 billion deal to purchase 14 Boeing aircraft while simultaneously pursuing the lease of Airbus planes to address an immediate shortage in its national airline’s fleet, Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Boeing Purchase Nears Completion
The interim government has completed arrangements to purchase 14 Boeing aircraft, with only the signing of the agreement remaining, according to State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat.
Millat also stated that procuring aircraft and energy resources from the United States could help reduce the trade imbalance between Dhaka and Washington.
However, the incoming government may review the Boeing offer before the purchase agreement is formally signed.
Fleet Expansion and Leasing Plans
The proposed Boeing order, valued at approximately $3.7 billion at list prices, includes both wide-body Boeing 787 Dreamliners and narrow-body 737 MAX aircraft. This expansion aims to strengthen both long-haul and regional operations over the next decade.
Due to an expected delivery timeframe of up to five years, the government plans to lease aircraft, preferably through dry leasing, for the next five years to address current fleet shortages.
Leasing options are being explored primarily with Airbus, a move intended to diversify Biman’s fleet while ensuring continued operations.
Addressing Capacity and Ongoing Reforms
Biman Bangladesh Airlines currently operates international routes with around 14 aircraft, significantly below the estimated 30 to 35 aircraft needed to meet growing passenger demand and support planned network expansion.
The combined approach of long-term acquisition and short-term leasing is designed to stabilize operations and provide a foundation for sustained growth.
The government has initiated comprehensive reviews of Biman’s operational structure to address inefficiencies and improve passenger services. Recruitment efforts are underway to fill critical manpower gaps within the organization.
Preparations for hajj operations have been completed, with necessary personnel deployed to ensure smooth flights for pilgrims.
The government’s ultimate goal is to transform Biman into an international-standard airline through structural reforms, fleet expansion, and a commitment to service excellence.
