Australian police have taken two people into custody following reports of gunshots and injuries at Bondi Beach in Sydney. Authorities are urging people to avoid the area as the police operation remains ongoing.

Multiple people have been injured in the incident, with emergency workers reporting they have transported eight people to various Sydney hospitals. No immediate figures were available regarding any fatalities.

Videos circulating on social media appear to show people fleeing Bondi Beach as gunshots and police sirens are heard. Reuters has not yet independently verified the footage.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog released a statement saying the attack targeted Jewish people who were gathering to celebrate the first candle of Hanukkah on Bondi Beach, describing the incident as a “vile terrorist” act.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s office stated they are aware of the active security situation and are advising people in the vicinity to follow information released by New South Wales Police.

New South Wales Police continue to investigate the situation and have asked the public to avoid the Bondi Beach area.
