Camping and caravanning continued to gain popularity across the European Union in 2025, with a total of 413 million nights spent at campsites, recreational vehicle parks, and trailer parks.
Camping and Caravanning Popularity on the Rise
While representing 13.4% of all tourist accommodation nights in 2025, camping and caravanning have seen steady growth over the past decade. Nights spent in these outdoor accommodations increased by 28.5% compared to 2015, exceeding the 23.4% increase observed in hotels and other short-stay accommodations.
The peak season for camping and caravanning is during the summer months. In 2025, 67.0% (277 million nights) of all nights spent at these accommodations occurred between June and August. Numbers began to rise in March, peaked at 118 million nights in August, and then decreased to 40 million in September, 15 million in October, and approximately 5 million in December.

Regional Trends
France was the most popular destination for camping and caravanning in 2025, accounting for 154 million nights spent, or 37.2% of the EU total. Spain followed with 49.8 million nights, Italy with 49.1 million, and Germany with 45.0 million.
The Netherlands and Portugal also saw significant numbers, with 26.8 million and 7.1 million nights spent respectively, rounding out the top 10 EU countries.
