Canterbury communities fume over planned postal closures

Residents of North Canterbury, New Zealand, are expressing frustration over a decision by New Zealand Post to remove postal services from their towns, requiring them to travel to collect their mail.

Postal Service Changes in North Canterbury

New Zealand Post briefed the Waimakariri District Council last week on plans to end postal services at Waikuku Beach, Pegasus and Woodend in May. A new service is planned for Ravenswood, north of Woodend, and is scheduled to open this month.

Janine Rogers, a resident of Waikuku Beach, stated that residents rely on post office boxes at the local general store as there is no residential mail delivery. “Having to drive to collect mail feels counterintuitive to the purpose of a mail service,” she said. “Residents should have the option to be included in a home delivery service if the boxes are to be moved.”

Waimakariri district councillor Shona Powell voiced concerns for residents with mobility issues, citing limited public transport options in Waikuku Beach. Waikuku Beach is 6km from the new Ravenswood service centre, and residents will need to cross a highway to reach it. Residents of Pegasus also expressed safety concerns about crossing State Highway 1 while walking or cycling, with bus service available only hourly.

Pegasus has a population of approximately 4500, including a growing number of elderly residents and those with mobility challenges, Powell noted. She has advocated for a post box in Pegasus to allow residents to post mail outside of business hours. “People can’t just drop down and post a card to a dear friend,” she said.

Waimakariri Mayor Dan Gordon acknowledged the planned Ravenswood store but expressed concern about withdrawing services from smaller, semi-rural communities like Waikuku Beach. “I have lived in Waikuku and know the area well,” Gordon said. “I have extended an invitation to NZ Post to visit the area with me to better understand the situation on the ground. I also formally requested they reconsider their proposal for this community, and to look at what additional services could be provided at Pegasus such as a receiving post box.”

NZ Post general manager consumer Sarah Sandoval said the company takes “a careful, evidence-based approach” when deciding to close agencies. “We took a detailed look at drive time data and engaged with our retail partners to gain local insights to help understand where changes made sense, including visiting the local area as part of this review process,” she stated.

The changes are scheduled to begin in May, with post office boxes being relocated from Waikuku Beach to the new Ravenswood store. Sandoval added that NZ Post recognizes the importance of mail access for Waikuku Beach residents and is exploring the possibility of future mail delivery options for the area. A new agency will open in Ravenswood this month, offering a full range of services including domestic and international parcel sending, letter sending and PO boxes. Sandoval stated Ravenswood was chosen due to its “strong and growing foot traffic, making it a practical and convenient location for customers in the wider area.”
