Cape Town Police Arrest Suspect in DA Councillor Sinovuyo Dyokwe Murder

Police in Cape Town have arrested a 37-year-old man suspected of orchestrating the murder of Democratic Alliance ward candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe. Officers apprehended the suspect in Parklands during a joint intelligence-driven operation on Saturday, July 25, 2026, following an intensive investigation into the fatal shooting linked to local extortion schemes.

Law enforcement officials in the Western Cape have secured a major breakthrough in the high-profile homicide investigation surrounding Democratic Alliance candidate councillor Sinovuyo Miranda Dyokwe. The 37-year-old accused, who had reportedly been evading capture, was tracked down in Parklands during a coordinated raid executed by provincial Serious Violent Crime Investigation detectives alongside members of the SAPS Special Task Force.

The operation yielded more than just an arrest. During the apprehension, authorities seized the vehicle allegedly used in the commission of the offence as well as seven cellular phones expected to provide crucial electronic evidence as detectives deepen their probe.

Extortion Demands Preceded the Fatal Shooting in Dunoon

Investigators state that the targeted killing grew out of a systematic extortion racket. According to police findings, the victim had been subjected to intense financial pressure linked to a housing relocation project in the Dunoon area.

The investigation indicates that Dyokwe had previously been coerced into making regular payments before taking a firm stand against the criminal demands. In February, she detailed her fears in an affidavit submitted to law enforcement, noting that an individual identified as AV had approached her to demand protection fees. When she ultimately refused to continue paying, direct threats were leveled against her life.

The violence culminated on June 20, 2026. Dyokwe had just returned from a voting station where she spent the day assisting local residents with voter registration activities ahead of the upcoming local government elections. As she walked home along Mnandi Street in Dunoon, two armed suspects followed and shot her multiple times.

Public Tips and Multi-Agency Police Work Drive the Breakthrough

The weekend arrest followed a painstaking inquiry that relied heavily on community cooperation. Police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut emphasized that detectives acted directly on intelligence provided by members of the public regarding the suspect’s whereabouts, allowing the task force to close in.

With extortion syndicates increasingly threatening public representatives, businesses, and community stability across the region, safety officials continue to urge residents and business owners to report intimidation immediately through dedicated police anti-extortion channels, Crime Stop, or anonymous municipal tip lines.
