Police on the Celje Police Administration territory intercepted four highly intoxicated drivers over a recent weekend, including a motorist traveling nearly four times the legal blood alcohol limit in Solčava and a driver who crashed into the Mislinja River.
Law enforcement personnel intervened in several severe traffic incidents driven by extreme alcohol consumption, ranging from wrong-way expressway navigation to vehicles plunging directly into local waterways.
Otiški Vrh River Plunge and Holmec Collision
The most severe physical incident unfolded in the Otiški Vrh area, where a motorist lost control of their vehicle due to inappropriate speed and careened straight into the Mislinja River. Breathalyzer testing administered at the scene recorded 1.16 milligrams of alcohol per liter of exhaled air, which translates to a blood alcohol concentration of roughly 2.3 per mille.
A female passenger sustained minor injuries in the river crash according to regional reporting, while the driver and three remaining passengers escaped without physical harm. A separate incident occurred in Holmec, where a motorist driving with nearly two per mille of alcohol—registering 0.99 milligrams per liter in exhaled air—triggered a collision that fortunately resulted in no injuries.
Solčava and Maribor Road Interceptions
The highest intoxication level recorded during the weekend enforcement operation occurred in Solčava. Officers pulled over a motorist due to erratic and unsafe driving behavior, discovering a staggering 3.76 per mille of alcohol in the driver’s bloodstream, equivalent to 1.88 milligrams per liter of exhaled air.
Shortly after midnight, authorities stationed in Celje intercepted a female driver operating a passenger car in the wrong direction along Maribor Road. A breathalyzer examination confirmed she had 3.20 per mille of alcohol in her system, corresponding to 1.60 milligrams per liter of exhaled air.

Officials emphasized that driving under the influence remains one of the primary risk factors for severe traffic collisions. The Celje Police Administration released detailed warnings regarding how alcohol impairs psychophysical capabilities behind the wheel.

The Celje Police Administration explained that the presence of alcohol diminishes a driver’s psychophysical abilities, impairs the perception of surroundings, narrows the field of vision, affects the estimation of distances and the speed of other vehicles, and prolongs reaction time, while noting that alcohol frequently increases a sense of confidence, which can lead to speeding and risky overtaking.
The Celje Police Administration added that for a driver with 0.5 per mille of alcohol in their blood, the probability of causing a traffic accident doubles, whereas with 1.1 per mille of alcohol it increases as much as 8-fold compared to a sober driver, which once again confirms the dangers of driving under the influence and the necessity of carefully observing safety distances and driving speeds.
