China dropping visa requirement for Canadian tourists, business visitors for rest of 2026

China is suspending visa requirements for Canadian tourists and business travellers until the end of the year, a move intended to ease cross-border travel. The decision follows a commitment made by Chinese President Xi Jinping to Prime Minister Mark Carney during talks in Beijing last month.

Visa Waiver Details

The new visa initiative will take effect on Tuesday and remain in place through December 31, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry. Ordinary passport holders from Canada and Britain will be exempt from visa requirements for stays of up to 30 days for business, tourism, family visits, exchanges, and transit purposes.

The policy effectively eliminates visa fees of approximately $140.

Government Response

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand stated that Beijing’s decision will simplify travel, support business exchanges, and strengthen ties between Canada and China.

Recent Trade Agreements

The visa change comes after Canada and China reached an agreement allowing approximately 50,000 Chinese-made electric vehicles into Canada at a reduced tariff rate. China also lowered its tariffs on canola seeds and pledged to eliminate tariffs on other Canadian products.

Expert Commentary

Guy Saint-Jacques, Canada’s ambassador to China from 2012 to 2016, described the visa change as a positive sign for the relationship between the two countries, stating it was a “reward for the efforts made by PM Carney to normalize the bilateral relationship.” He noted that China has granted visa-free access to nationals of around 60 countries.

Saint-Jacques added that the decision is linked to other agreements, such as the reduction in tariffs on canola seeds, and reflects a desire for Canada to fully implement agreed-upon decisions.

He also emphasized the need for Carney to reassure Canadians about efforts to counter Chinese interference in Canada, advocating for the swift launch of a foreign agent registry and increased resources for the RCMP to address harassment of Canadians of Chinese origin.

Travel Statistics & Business Reaction

Federal government statistics show approximately 221,000 visits to China by Canadian travellers in the first quarter of 2025, up from around 100,000 in the same period of 2024.

Candace Laing, president and CEO of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the new policy, stating that renewed travel opportunities would help Canadian companies connect with one of the world’s largest markets and support sectors including agriculture, tourism, technology, and investment. She also noted that Canadian companies will continue to assess economic opportunities alongside market access and risk considerations.
