Communities in Pidie Jaya, Aceh, are regaining access to clean water thanks to a new treatment system installed by researchers at Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), addressing challenges created by recent flash floods and landslides.
Clean Water System Installed in Aceh
The system is located at Raudhatul Mukarramah Al Aziziyah boarding school, chosen for its need for water access and its proximity to a river, which serves as the raw water source. The pesantren, a community hub, will support both students and residents in the surrounding area.
Developed over five years by ITS researchers, the system can treat turbid river water and produce up to 2,000 litres of clean water per hour. It is designed to operate 8–10 hours daily, based on local demand, and features a compact, portable design.
The treatment process utilizes electrocoagulation to reduce turbidity without chemical additives, followed by sedimentation, filtration, membrane treatment, and UV disinfection to ensure water safety. This approach aims to maintain efficiency and relatively low operational costs.
The project involved collaboration between ITS’ Center for Sustainable Infrastructure and Environment Studies, the Directorate of Research and Community Service, alumni associations, and industry partners including PT Adhi Karya, PT PP, PT WIKA, and PT Selaras Alam Varia Energi.
Students at the boarding school have received hands-on training in operating and maintaining the system, which is designed for simple maintenance and independent management by the local community.
The initiative aims to restore access to clean water and support the long-term needs of the community in Pidie Jaya.
