Denmark has responded to a social media post by a U.S. official’s wife that appeared to suggest potential American interest in acquiring Greenland, reaffirming its expectation of full respect for its territorial integrity.

Greenland Acquisition Interest

Katie Miller, married to the U.S. president’s deputy chief of staff, posted an altered image of Greenland colored with the American flag on X, formerly known as Twitter, late Saturday, accompanied by the word “SOON.” Danish Ambassador to the U.S., Jesper Moeller Soerensen, reposted the message, offering a “friendly reminder” of the close defense ties between the two countries.

Soerensen stated that U.S. security is also Greenland’s and Denmark’s security, noting Greenland is already part of NATO. He also highlighted Denmark’s increased defense spending, committing $13.7 billion (£10.2 billion) that “can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic,” and reiterated the expectation of “full respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”

The exchange follows a major U.S. military operation against Venezuela on Saturday, resulting in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and their removal to New York. The U.S. president subsequently stated the U.S. would “run” Venezuela and that U.S. oil companies would “start making money for the country.”

The U.S. president has previously considered the possibility of acquiring Greenland, citing its strategic location and mineral wealth. Greenland has had extensive self-government since 1979, though defence and foreign policy remain the responsibility of Denmark. While most Greenlanders favor eventual independence from Denmark, opinion polls indicate strong opposition to becoming part of the United States.
