/ Deputy Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mojtaba Dhul-Nouri, confirmed today, Saturday, that Iran has the right to stop and search ships in the Strait of Hormuz “whenever it wants,” if it is considered to threaten the country’s national security.
Dhu Al-Nouri said in an interview with the Iranian “Dede Pan” website in response to a question about some officials’ demand to close the Strait of Hormuz, despite the fact that the waterways and straits are managed in accordance with international laws: “Iran can stop ships whenever it wants and inspect them, and this is its right.”
He added, “International laws govern waterways and no country can act arbitrarily, pointing out, for example, that the passage of an arms shipment through the Strait of Hormuz puts Iran’s security at risk and threatens its people, and then it can be stopped and searched.”
