Do not step on the Daugava in Rīga / Article

Riga City Council’s Security, Order and Corruption Prevention Committee has requested that Executive Director Jānis Langs prohibit residents from walking on the ice of the Daugava River due to safety concerns.

Daugava River Ice Walking Ban

All members of the committee voted in favor of the ban. Individuals found on the ice during the prohibition may receive a warning or be fined up to €100.

In recent weeks, the Daugava River in Riga has become a popular, though unofficial, walking path, with many people observed on the ice.

A previous ban on walking on the ice in the city center was lifted on February 3rd, but restrictions remained in place, prohibiting anyone from being on the ice within 50 meters of bridges and overpasses. Authorities previously warned that the ice under the bridges is fragile and dangerous.

Residents are encouraged to adhere to safety guidelines and utilize designated areas for ice recreation, which are detailed on an ice map available on the Riga City Council and municipal police websites.
