President Donald Trump claimed Sunday that Iran is “agreeing” to a U.S.-proposed 15-point plan to end the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Negotiations with Iran
Trump stated during a press conference on Air Force One that Iran has accepted “most of the points” of the plan, which was delivered to them via Pakistan. He questioned why Iran wouldn’t agree, adding that the U.S. is also seeking “a couple of other things.”
The U.S. is engaged in both direct and indirect negotiations with Iran, Trump said, adding that his administration is “extremely well” positioned in the talks.
Uncertainty and Regime Change
Despite the progress, Trump acknowledged some uncertainty, stating, “You never know with Iran, because we negotiate with them and then we always have to blow them up.”
He expressed confidence that a deal could be reached “soon,” but also conceded that it’s possible a deal won’t materialize.
Trump also reaffirmed previous claims of regime change in Iran, stating that the previous regime has been “decimated” and that the U.S. is now dealing with “different people.” He described the current Iranian leadership as “much more reasonable.”
Military Options and Current Status
When asked about deploying ground troops to Iran, Trump said the U.S. is considering “lots of alternatives,” but indicated a ground operation may not be necessary, claiming the U.S. is “weeks ahead of schedule in Iran.”
Trump asserted that the U.S. has “knocked out” Iran’s air force, missiles, and navy, describing Iran as “sputtering.”
Mojtaba Khamenei’s Condition
Responding to questions about Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, Trump stated he believes Khamenei is alive but “obviously in serious trouble and seriously wounded” following a recent strike.
