Tremors were felt across Pakistan and parts of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab Friday night following a 6.2 magnitude earthquake with an epicenter in Afghanistan’s Hindu Kush region. Authorities have initiated precautionary measures and assessments to determine if any damage or casualties occurred.
Earthquake Details
The Pakistan Meteorological Department reported the earthquake occurred at 9:13pm at a depth of 190 kilometers. Tremors were felt in Islamabad, Chitral, Peshawar, Swat, and Shangla, among other areas.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a 5.8 magnitude earthquake south of Jurm in Afghanistan.
Response and Assessments
Islamabad Police Chief Ali Nasir Rizvi directed all officers to assess the situation in their respective areas and respond immediately to any incidents requiring assistance. He also ordered the prompt submission of situation reports.
Rescue 1122 officials in Rawalpindi reported no emergency calls or casualties following the earthquake. Similarly, K-P Rescue 1122 spokesperson Bilal Ahmed Faizi stated that their control center had not received any calls from the public.
The Punjab Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported no loss of life or property in Punjab. Tremors were felt in Lahore, Mianwali, Jhang, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, the Potohar region, Sargodha, and other districts. PDMA authorities are inspecting government and public buildings for potential damage, and control rooms remain operational 24/7.
The PDMA has advised the public to report any earthquake-related damages through its helpline at 1129.
Recent Seismic Activity
Earlier on Friday, a magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). In February, a 5.6 magnitude earthquake also struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, with tremors felt in several Pakistani cities. Last month, a 4.5 magnitude earthquake jolted Balochistan’s Khuzdar district, but no casualties or damage were reported.
