Oscar-nominated actor Ed Harris has publicly expressed frustration with his role as Everett McKinney on the Paramount+ series Dutton Ranch, claiming he was misled regarding his character’s importance during Season 1. Despite this, executive producers and co-stars have confirmed that Harris will move into a primary lead role for Season 2, which begins filming in February 2027.
The tension surrounding Ed Harris’s tenure on the Yellowstone spinoff Dutton Ranch boiled over during the July 2026 press cycle. Harris, a veteran of stage and screen, revealed to Variety that he felt misled
about the scope of his involvement before signing his two-season contract. According to Harris, he had been led to believe he would be one of the show’s four main characters, only to find his role underused and inconsequential
once filming began.
The frustration reached a breaking point during the production of the first season, with Harris admitting he told his team midway through filming to get me the f— out of here.
The actor specifically cited a deleted scene—a moment where his character was meant to sing in a bar—as a point of significant contention. Production told Harris the scene was cut because it was too ‘up’ for the dark ending of that episode,
an explanation he found insufficient at the time.
The Shift to a Lead Ensemble in Season 2
While Harris’s behind-the-scenes experience was marked by dissatisfaction, the show’s leadership has moved to rectify the imbalance for the upcoming season. Kelly Reilly, who stars as Beth Dutton, and executive producer Cole Hauser have publicly committed to a structural shift that places Harris at the center of the narrative. Speaking to tvinsider.com, both actors emphasized that the first season’s plot required a more limited focus, but that the foundation is now set for a broader ensemble.
“He’s going to become a very important, integral part of Season 2. And for both Kelly and I, obviously, Annette is phenomenal, but I cannot wait to work more with him. He’s such an amazing American actor that I think was used very sparingly this year. We’re going to make sure that he is a big part of helping us moving forward in whatever capacity.”

Reilly, describing the series’ evolution, noted that the inclusion of heavyweights like Harris and Annette Bening was essential for the show’s identity. I think Season 2 is going to feel very much more Ed’s show,

and that the presence of seasoned actors like Harris has helped legitimize the drama.
Unresolved Narrative Arcs and Future Production
The show is expected to move away from the original Montana-based Yellowstone ranch setting, forcing the core characters to operate from a position of instability in South Texas.

He confirmed to JustJared that he is signed on for two seasons and has been assured that his character will have more to do when production resumes in February 2027. While he remains critical of the initial process, he acknowledged that upon watching the finished product, he felt his character was relatively important to the story.
The production team has not yet provided a specific premiere date for Season 2, which is listed as TBA on Paramount+.
