European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation, Ekaterina Zaharieva, will visit Riga, Latvia, to attend the Baltic Startup Policy Forum during TechChill, marking her first official visit to the country. The forum, held March 25-27, will focus on EU-level startup, research, and innovation priorities with Baltic policymakers, founders, and investors.
Baltic Startup Policy Forum to Address Deeptech and Unicorn Development
The Baltic Startup Policy Forum will be held on March 26 and opened by Latvia’s Minister for Economics, Viktors Valainis. High-level officials from Estonia and Lithuania will also participate, sharing their countries’ perspectives on the startup ecosystem. Representatives from organizations including Unicorns LT, Startin.LV, and the Estonian Founders Society will discuss challenges and opportunities in the Baltic region.
Particular attention will be paid to cultivating the next generation of unicorns and commercializing deeptech innovations. Roberts Alhimionoks, Director of Startin.LV, emphasized the importance of the Baltic states’ participation in European startup policy discussions, stating, “The Forum in Riga will create an opportunity for policymakers and ecosystem representatives to collaboratively define priorities, learn from each other, and strengthen our region’s voice in Europe.”
The Baltic nations consistently rank highly in startup policy, demonstrating a significant contribution to European funding. This environment is seen as ideal for discussing EU initiatives like EU Inc, which aims to reduce bureaucratic barriers to cross-border business and investment within the EU.
“The Baltic States have great potential to be one of Europe’s most dynamic hubs for innovation and entrepreneurship,” said Commissioner Zaharieva. “I am delighted to visit Riga and to engage directly with the founders, investors, and policymakers who are shaping the future of Europe’s startup ecosystem.”
Zaharieva will also meet with Latvia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Baiba Braže, to discuss the Baltics’ strategic role in European autonomy, considering the global competition in areas like microchip and quantum technology.
