The family of a former National Rugby League (NRL) and Kiwis star has been targeted following alleged criminal associations of his son, escalating gang conflict in Sydney, Australia. The former player underwent surgery after being shot outside his home and remains hospitalized.

Shooting and Arson Attacks Linked to Family

Shootings and arson attacks across Sydney’s west over the past 24 hours have been linked to Iziah Utai, the son of former Canterbury-Bankstown winger Matt Utai, according to police.

Matt Utai, a 2004 NRL premiership winner, was ambushed and shot outside his home in Greenacre, southwest Sydney, around 6 a.m. Tuesday. He sustained serious leg wounds in the attack.

NSW Police organised crime squad boss Brad Abdy told reporters Wednesday that authorities believe all offenses are targeting one family. He described the violence as “ridiculously disgusting offences” and expressed concern that innocent people were caught up in the conflict.

Further Incidents Reported

Shots were fired at a home in outer western Sydney’s St Clair around 12:45 a.m. Wednesday. A woman in her 50s was inside the residence but was not injured. A car was also found on fire in a nearby suburb.

Unverified footage circulating on social media appears to show alleged offenders taunting Iziah Utai before firing shots.

An underworld-focused media outlet reported Wednesday that the Alameddine crime family is “at war” with a group dubbed the Coconut Cartel, sharing a message purportedly from the Alameddine family threatening Iziah Utai and his associates.

Detective Acting Superintendent Abdy stated that Iziah Utai was the intended target due to his association with “criminal entities.” He is believed to be overseas in an unknown location.

Hours after Wednesday’s shooting, a house and vehicle were set alight in Guilford West, near Parramatta. Firefighters extinguished the fires, and no injuries were reported.

Police Response

Police have established a dedicated task force, comprised of over 100 investigators, to address the escalating gang violence.

Matt Utai starred in the 2004 NRL grand final, scoring two tries for the Bulldogs in their victory over the Sydney Roosters. His former club expressed shock and sadness following the shooting.

The New Zealand and Samoa international played 167 NRL games, including three seasons with the Wests Tigers starting in 2011.
